The Global Energy Transition Index

The ‘Global Energy Transition Index 2020’ has been launched recently. About the report 1. It is a fact-based ranking intended to enable policymakers and businesses to plot the course for a successful energy transition. 2. It analyses the energy sectors of 115 countries and benchmark countries on their current energy system performance annually. 3. It also provides a forward‑looking way as it measures the readiness of countries for the energy transition. 4. It is a part of the World Economic Forum’s Fostering Effective Energy Transition initiative and based on its predecessor, the Energy Architecture Performance Index. Findings 1. 94 countries have improved their ETI score since 2015, representing 70% of the global population. 2. 20% of the global population uses as much energy as the remaining 80%. 3. 70% of young people consider the speed of energy transition to be either stagnant or too slow. 4. India support Taiwan...

1. Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Organisation (WHO) was opposed by China. 2. Taiwan’s status had limited its ability to share information about COVID-19 and its arrangement with the WHO was not satisfactory. Taiwan’s status 1. Taiwan is not a member of the WHO. 2. China has opposed its inclusion in the World Health Assembly (WHA), the organization’s decision-making body, citing the ‘One China principle’. 3. But, Taiwan participated in the WHA as an observer from 2009 to 2016. India’s stand 1. India is among the 179 of the 193 member states of the UN that do not maintain any diplomatic ties with Taiwan. 2. 1. India is set to take over as the next Chairperson of the World Health Organisation’s decision-making executive body 2. India will have to decide on supporting the USA’s move to reinstate Taiwan’s observer status at the World Health Assembly (WHA) that is opposed by China. 3. India’s nominee will take over as the Chairperson, replacing Japan. 4. India is likely to hold the post for the next three years. 5. The seven-nation meeting was attended by the foreign ministers of Australia, Brazil, India, Israel, Japan, and the Republic of Korea. 6. All invitees other than India are major non-NATO allies of the United States, who would be expected to support USA’s move. 7. China has been referring to the “One-China” principle as a widely accepted universal consensus of the international community including the Indian government.
