Basic Terminology of Environment and Ecology

Abiotic components: Non-living and inorganic components of an ecosystem constitute the abiotic components like soil, water, air, sunlight, etc.

Amensalism: It is a type of interaction between the two species where one is harmed and others remain unaffected. For example, penicillin and bacteria.

Atmosphere: Atmosphere is a physical mixture of atmospheric gases, water vapour and suspended particulates which is surrounding the earth from all the sides. It is bounded to the surface by the gravity of earth.

Autotrophs: The organisms which produce their own food from inorganic substances like CO2 and water are called autotrophs. They are also known as primary producers.

Auto ecology: Ecological study of a particular individual or species with respect to the environment is regarded as auto ecology.

The DNA Technology (Regulation) Bill

Recently, the DNA Technology (Regulation) Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha to regulate the use of DNA technology for establishing the identity of a person. What are the provisions of the bill? 1. Establishment of National and Regional DNA Data Bank. 2. Every data bank would have indices such as the crime scene index, suspects’ or undertrials’ index, offenders’ index, missing persons’ index and unknown deceased persons’ index. 3. Establishment of DNA Regulatory Board which accredits labs analysing DNA samples. 4. Written consent by individuals is mandatory before collection of their DNA samples and creating a DNA profile of an individual. 5. However, consent is not required for offences with punishment for more than seven years in jail or death. Deletion of DNA profile from Data banks: 1. 1.  India and Vietnam sign 12 agreements to boost bilateral ties India  and  Vietnam  have signed  12 agreements  for cooperation in areas like defence, IT, space, double taxation and sharing white shipping information, signaling a strong upward push in their strategic ties. The agreements were signed by the  two sides officials  in presence of PM Narendra Modi  and his Vietnamese counterpart  Nguyen Xuan Phuc . India will provide  $500 million  credit line for Vietnam for defence cooperation. India also offered a grant of  $5 million  to set up a  software park in Vietnam.
